Description

This platinum white dumbo ear guppy opens with a golden olive head that fades gradually into a silvery white platinum body, a soft transition that gives the fish a warm start before settling into that bright, almost glowing platinum tone across most of its length. It is a striking base colour on its own, and one that pairs nicely with the darker features found further back on the fish.

Right at the base of the tail sits a dark navy black band, a clean marking where the pale platinum body ends and the tail itself begins. Past that band the caudal fin opens into a broad, pale white fan, creating a clear contrast between the dark tail base and the much lighter colour spreading out from it. The dorsal fin carries a matching dark navy tone, echoing the tail base colour and tying the two darker features of the fish together visually.

The dumbo pectoral fins sit just behind the gill plate and are noticeably larger and rounder than a standard guppy carries, adding a third point of visual interest alongside the platinum body and the dark tailed white fan. When this fish swims or flares those fins during a display, the oversized pectoral shape becomes obvious even next to other guppies in the same tank.

Males show the complete package, the golden olive head fading into platinum white, the dark navy tail base opening into a pale caudal fan, and the oversized dumbo pectoral fins. Females are rounder and plainer bodied as guppy females typically are, carrying only a soft hint of the platinum tone and considerably smaller fins throughout, including smaller pectoral fins without the dramatic dumbo size.

Dumbo strains benefit from a little extra thought in tank setup, since those larger pectoral fins can snag more easily on rough decor than a standard guppy’s fins would. A bare bottom tank or one with fine sand substrate is a safer choice than coarse gravel, and a sponge filter running gentle flow helps protect the fins from a stronger power filter intake.

Tankmates should stay on the calmer side, other peaceful livebearers, small tetras and corydoras all make sensible choices, while fin nipping species are best avoided given how much extra fin surface a dumbo guppy carries. Feeding a varied diet of quality flake or micro pellets daily, along with live or frozen baby brine shrimp added a few times a week, supports healthy growth and helps keep the platinum body colour bright.

As livebearers, guppies give birth to fully formed, free swimming fry roughly every four weeks once a pair settles into a stable tank, with no egg laying involved. Sold as a breeding pair.

The contrast between the dark navy tail base and the pale caudal fan tends to sharpen up as this strain matures, with younger fish often showing a softer, less defined line between the two than a fully grown adult will carry. Stable water conditions support that development nicely, and a routine of weekly partial water changes around twenty five percent, combined with steady filtration, helps both the platinum body sheen and the dark tailed fin pattern come in cleanly. A varied diet with some live or frozen food mixed into the regular flake or micro pellets also helps this dumbo strain reach a good size while keeping its platinum colouring bright.

Good filtration and stable water temperature round out the basic care this strain needs to look its best long term.
