Description

Blue grass guppies take their name from the fine speckled pattern found in the fins, and this fish carries that look over a soft silvery lavender body with a purple blue sheen washing across the shoulder. That shoulder sheen tends to shift slightly in tone depending on the light, sometimes reading more purple and other times leaning further into blue, which keeps the fish visually interesting from different angles.

The caudal and dorsal fins carry a bright sky blue base scattered with fine black speckling, the grass pattern the strain is named for. Each speckle sits fairly small and distinct against the blue background, similar to blades of grass caught at different angles, and the overall density and placement of that speckling varies a bit from fish to fish, so a small group will show some natural variation even while sharing the same base colour scheme.

Body shape here is standard, giving the lavender to purple blue body colour and the speckled sky blue fins room to be the main visual feature without any unusual body proportions competing for attention. It is a classic, well balanced looking strain that has remained popular for a long time because of how clean the contrast between body and fin colour reads.

Males show the complete look, the silvery lavender body with its purple blue shoulder sheen, paired with sky blue fins carrying fine black grass speckling. Females are rounder bodied and considerably plainer as guppy females typically are, with only a soft hint of the shoulder sheen and much smaller, far less speckled fins.

This is a generally hardy and easy strain to keep, needing standard guppy care rather than anything unusual, good filtration, stable temperature and a consistent water change routine. A sponge filter or a guarded power filter intake both suit this fish fine since the fins are a reasonable size and not particularly delicate.

Good tankmates include other peaceful livebearers, small tetras, corydoras and similar calm community fish, with fin nippers best avoided so the grass pattern stays undamaged and easy to appreciate. Feeding a varied diet of quality flake or micro pellets daily, along with live or frozen baby brine shrimp added a few times a week, supports healthy growth and helps keep both the shoulder sheen and the speckled fin pattern looking sharp.

As livebearers, a settled pair will produce broods of fully formed, free swimming fry roughly every four weeks, with no egg laying stage involved. Regular partial water changes of around twenty five percent weekly, combined with steady filtration, help this classic strain hold its colour and speckled pattern clearly as it grows into a fully coloured adult, and good lighting over the tank helps that speckling stand out clearly against the blue fin background.

The density of speckling in the fins can vary a fair amount between individual fish, with some showing a lighter scattering of black grass marks and others carrying a much denser pattern that almost fills the fin. Both are completely normal variation within this strain rather than a sign of anything wrong. A consistent routine of weekly partial water changes around twenty five percent, along with steady filtration, helps this classic strain stay healthy and lets the natural speckled pattern come through clearly as the fish grows into full colour over its first few months.
