Description

Short body guppies like this one carry a compact, rounded shape rather than the longer torpedo body a standard strain grows into, and that shorter frame tends to make the fins look even bigger by comparison. This particular fish leans into that with a pearly blue white head and shoulder that fades into a soft lavender tone along the flank, broken up by a streak of warm olive gold running just above the lateral line.

The caudal fin is where the grass pattern really shows itself. Rather than one flat colour, the tail carries a pale ice blue background scattered with fine black speckling that looks a lot like blades of grass caught mid sway, no two fish showing quite the same spread of markings. The dorsal fin sits tall and picks up the same ice blue base with matching black flecks, giving the fish a matched top and tail look when it swims.

Because the body is shorter and more compact than a standard guppy, this strain often reads as chunkier and a little more solid looking in the water, and the fins appear proportionally larger even though they are a similar actual size to what a standard bodied fish would carry. It is a subtle difference but a noticeable one once you have a few guppies side by side to compare.

Males show the full spread of blue white shoulder colour, the olive gold flank streak and the speckled ice blue fins. Females stay rounder and plainer as guppy females do, with a hint of the blue white shoulder tone but nowhere near the fin size or speckled patterning the males carry.

Short bodied strains benefit from a bit of extra care around feeding, since that compact shape means less room for a full digestive tract and these fish can be more prone to bloating if overfed. Small frequent meals work better than one large feeding, and a mix of quality flake, micro pellets and occasional live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp or daphnia keeps digestion moving well while still supporting good colour and fin growth.

A sponge filter with gentle flow suits this fish nicely, both because the shorter body is not always the strongest swimmer against a powerful current and because it keeps the tall dorsal and speckled caudal fins from taking unnecessary wear. Fine sand or a bare bottom tank is a safer substrate choice than coarse gravel, and calm tankmates such as other peaceful livebearers, small tetras or corydoras make good company, while boisterous or fin nipping species are best kept elsewhere.

Guppies are livebearers, giving birth to fully formed, free swimming fry roughly every four weeks once a pair settles into stable conditions, so a healthy pair should keep producing a steady trickle of young. Stable warm water and a varied diet help this short bodied strain hold its shape and colour well as it matures, and keeping stress low is especially important since compact bodied fish can be a touch more sensitive to sudden changes in water quality or temperature than standard bodied guppies.

Sold as a breeding pair.

Water changes are worth keeping on a steady schedule with this strain, roughly twenty five percent weekly, since stable chemistry helps a short compact body stay healthy and keeps the ice blue fins looking crisp rather than dull. A gentle acclimation when first bringing this fish home also matters more than usual, short bodied guppies can be a touch more sensitive to sudden shifts in temperature or pH than their standard bodied relatives, so floating the bag and mixing tank water in slowly over twenty minutes or so gives it the best start. Once settled, this is a hardy and rewarding fish to watch, especially as the grass speckling develops further with age and good feeding.
