Description
Topaz Red guppies carry a pale gold body that stays soft and understated right up until the tail opens, where the colour story changes completely. The caudal fin splits cleanly into two tones, a cool silver blue across the top half and a bright orange red across the bottom, so the fish reads as calm and pale from the front and switches to bold and warm the moment it flares its tail toward another fish or a bright background.
That two tone split is the whole point of this strain. Some guppies fade gradually from one shade into another, but Topaz Red keeps a fairly clean line between the blue upper lobe and the red lower lobe rather than blending the two together. The dorsal fin picks up the same cool blue tone as the top of the tail, which ties the whole fish together when it swims rather than looking like two separate colour patches stitched onto one body.
Body shape stays close to a standard guppy, nothing oversized or exaggerated, with the tail opening into a broad fan rather than a narrow spike or ribbon. That makes this a strain where the colour split does the work rather than an unusual fin shape, and it tends to hold its pattern well as the fish matures rather than shifting around from one month to the next.
Males show the complete look, pale gold body, a blue tinted dorsal fin, and that sharp blue to red split through the tail. Females are rounder bodied and considerably plainer, as guppy females typically are, though ours still carry a soft golden tint through the body and a grey blue wash through the tail rather than going completely colourless. It reads as a smaller, quieter version of the male pattern rather than no pattern at all.
This is a generally easy strain to keep, needing standard guppy care rather than anything unusual. Good filtration, a stable temperature, and a consistent water change routine matter more here than any special equipment. A sponge filter or a guarded power filter intake both work fine since the fins are a moderate size and not particularly delicate.
Good tankmates include other peaceful livebearers, small tetras, corydoras and similar calm community fish, with fin nippers best avoided as with any guppy strain. Feeding a varied diet of quality flake or micro pellets daily, along with live or frozen baby brine shrimp added a few times a week, supports healthy growth and helps both halves of that tail colour stay bright rather than washing out over time.
As livebearers, a settled pair will produce broods of fully formed, free swimming fry roughly every four weeks, with no egg laying stage involved. Regular partial water changes of around twenty five percent weekly, combined with steady filtration, help this strain hold its blue to red tail split clearly as it grows into a fully coloured adult.
Sold as a breeding pair.
Topaz Red guppies can show some variation in exactly where that blue to red line sits on the tail, with some fish carrying more blue and others carrying more red, both being normal for this strain. Stable, well maintained water supports the fullest, most clearly defined split, and a routine of weekly partial water changes combined with steady filtration helps keep both colours looking sharp rather than fading into each other over time. A varied diet with occasional live or frozen food added to the usual flake and pellets also supports steady growth and helps this two tone pattern reach its fullest expression as the fish matures into adulthood.
