Description

HB blue guppies carry one of the more dramatic two tone body patterns you will find in the hobby, with a bronze brown front half that breaks sharply into a solid black rear half right around the midpoint of the body. That transition is fairly crisp rather than gradual, giving the fish a clearly divided, almost half and half look when viewed from the side.

Where the body pattern is bold and graphic, the fins bring a completely different kind of colour to the fish. Both the caudal and dorsal fins carry a deep metallic sapphire blue, rich and saturated enough to look almost glowing under strong aquarium lighting, and forming a striking contrast against the black rear half of the body it extends from.

The letters HB in this strain’s name refer to the half black pattern itself, a well established and recognisable guppy trait that breeders have worked with for a long time because of how reliably it produces that sharp bronze to black divide. Paired with the sapphire blue fin colour, it results in a fish that reads as bold and high contrast from across the room, yet still shows plenty of fine detail up close.

Males display the complete half black body pattern along with the full sapphire blue caudal and dorsal fins. Females are rounder and plainer overall, carrying only a faint suggestion of the two tone body pattern and considerably smaller, far less blue fins.

This is a generally hardy strain that does not call for anything beyond standard guppy care, good filtration, stable temperature and a consistent water change schedule. A sponge filter or a guarded power filter intake both suit this fish fine since the fins, while a good size and richly coloured, are not fragile or oversized.

Good tankmates include other peaceful livebearers, small tetras, corydoras and similar calm community fish. Fin nippers are worth avoiding as with any guppy strain, since damage to the sapphire blue caudal or dorsal fin will take time to regrow and will disrupt the fish’s overall look in the meantime.

As livebearers, a healthy pair kept in stable water will produce broods of fully formed, free swimming fry roughly every four weeks, with no egg laying stage involved. A varied diet built around quality flake or micro pellets daily, with live or frozen baby brine shrimp or daphnia worked in a few times a week, supports strong growth and helps that sapphire blue fin colour stay deep and saturated as the fish matures. Regular water changes of around twenty five percent weekly also help keep the black half of the body looking solid and glossy rather than fading toward a duller grey over time.

Sold as a breeding pair.

The sharp line between the bronze front half and the black rear half tends to become more defined as this strain matures, with younger fish sometimes showing a softer, less distinct transition that sharpens up over the first several months of growth. Stable water conditions play a real role in that process, and a consistent weekly water change routine of around twenty five percent, paired with steady filtration, helps both halves of the body pattern come in cleanly and keeps that sapphire blue fin colour looking deep and glossy rather than fading toward a duller tone under stress or poor water quality.

A varied diet with some colour enhancing food mixed in also helps keep the sapphire blue fins looking their most vivid as the fish grows toward full size.

Regular testing for ammonia and nitrite alongside the usual maintenance schedule rounds out a simple, low fuss care routine for this strain.
