Description

The Metal Black Guppy is a deep, glossy strain with a near-solid black body broken only by a bright iridescent green-blue patch across the shoulders and a pale cream chevron marking near the head. The tail and dorsal fin stay a rich, inky black with a soft dark grey edge, giving the fish a bold, almost shadowy silhouette that stands out beautifully against light gravel.

The metallic sheen on the shoulder area shifts between green, blue, and gold depending on the angle of light, which is the hallmark of true metal-bodied guppy strains. Unlike solid black strains, the small pale marking near the head and gills breaks up the darkness just enough to give each male a slightly different, individual pattern.

Every Metal Black Guppy from Classic Guppy is home-bred in Pune, never wild-caught, and raised on live baby brine shrimp for strong colour saturation and healthy fins. Orders ship in insulated, heat-packed boxes with a live arrival guarantee, and you can choose a single pair, a trio, or a proven breeding pair. Browse our full shop for more show-quality strains, or read our guppy care guide for tank setup and water tips.

Keep the Metal Black Guppy in a well-cycled aquarium of at least 10 gallons with a heater set between 24-27°C and gentle filtration. Because the body is so dark, a lighter substrate or background works well to show off the iridescent shoulder patch, while moderate lighting keeps the metallic sheen looking vivid rather than flat.

A varied diet of high-quality flake, live or frozen baby brine shrimp, and occasional Larviva Mysis helps keep the black pigmentation deep and the metallic shoulder patch bright across generations. Because dark colouring can fade with poor water quality, regular partial water changes help this strain hold its rich, glossy look.

Tip: Guppies are shoaling fish and settle in best with company – a trio or a proven breeding pair is a great starting point for a lively, well-settled shoal.
